The older they are...the harder it gets...

Joe has finally started speech therapy. It has been going very well, and he is really smitten with his private therapist! I couldn't be happier, he tends to be a difficult child at times and is very particular about who he allows into his circle of friends.
While we have seen progress--sometimes 2 words coming out at a time. Joe is learning the PECS program to help him communicate with us, something that seems to be working a bit too well at times! He has figured out if he brings me a picture then I am suppose to give it to him. So we are in turn, working on asking and not always getting! PECS is typically used with children who have Autism, which Joe does not have. But the side effect is that it helps with language development.
The hard part for me, is that I am watching other kids his age uttering sentences, and phrases, beginning to have conversations with their parents, and I am still waiting. While most parents don't want to loose their baby, I can't wait for mine to 'grow up' and have him tell me all that is going on in that little head of his. It is always a challenge when he is upset, he can't tell me why and I can only guess.
Being a special education teacher helps and hurts...I can at least see that he is developing appropriately cognitively. But my experience tells me there is a long road we have ahead of us..and the affect his speech may have on social relationships. So we grow and wait, and grow and learn....

I totally thought of you when I was writing about Liam yesterday - not sure if that sparked your thoughts - or if you've been thinking about that all along.

That's great that he's speaking two words! And the PECS system has got to help, but yeah, just because he brings the picture doesn't mean he gets it, right??

Also - saw your other post - let's go! I keep saying that the boys are the PERFECT age now. =)
